Sasquatch Books
Retail Price:  $18.95
Amazon Price: $13.15

Book Description:  For women who enjoy hiking, camping, backpacking, and other outdoor recreation or those inspired by Cheryl Strayed’s Wild, this is the definitive guide to being a woman in the great outdoors. This friendly handbook covers the matters of most concern to women, from “feminine functions” in the wilderness to how to deal with condescending men, as well as the basics of wilderness survival tailored to women’s unique needs. It includes gear lists in addition to advice for camp setup, fire building, food and water, safety, weather, and navigation.

Review

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. It is not only instructive, but entertaining.  The author carefully points out what actions a woman in the wilderness must take to not only survive but enjoy her wilderness experience.  You can tell that McConnell loves the wilderness and wants to share her knowledge with other women to equip them reconnect with nature.

This book is very thorough, giving you not only guidelines but lists on what to bring, how to stay safe, first aid, dealing with weather, how to set up camp including your cooking area, and much more.  Yet is is small enough to put in your pack so you can reference it while out hiking or camping.

If you are new to the wilderness experience, this book is definitely one you will want to read and even study.

The most comprehensive guide to one of the most popular activities in one of the most amazing playgrounds on Earth!
As a hiking destination, the San Juan Islands of Washington and their sister islands to the north offer scores of parks and preserves, hundreds of miles of trails catering to hikers of all levels, and year-round accessibility. Day Hiking: The San Juans and Gulf Islands is divided into roughly four sections: Anacortes, for many the gateway to the region; the San Juan Islands themselves, including some key islands not served by Washington State Ferries; Victoria, Canada, providing easy access to the Gulf Islands, as well as other unique destinations; and the magical southern Gulf Islands.
Author Craig Romano explores state parks, county parks, and provincial parks as well as some municipal and regional parks. He also features the recent expansion of San Juan Island National Historic Park on San Juan Island and the recently created Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, spanning several of the southern Gulf Islands, both of which are not yet familiar to many hikers. While the star attractions are the ferry-accessed islands, Romano also features several of the larger islands that don’t have ferry service (e.g., Stuart Island) making this guide of interest to paddlers and boaters who are looking for hikes too!

                  Book Description:

Elizabeth Wenk’s authoritative guide describes the 212-mile John Muir Trail, running from Yosemite Valley to the summit of Mt. Whitney. John Muir Trail provides all the necessary planning information, including up-to-date details on wilderness and permit regulations, food resupplies, trailhead amenities, and travel from nearby cities. Useful essentials are updated GPS coordinates and maps for prominent campsites (along with an updated list of sites along the trail), trail junctions, bear boxes, and other points of interest. The trail descriptions also include natural and human history to provide a workout for both body and mind — a must-have for any Muir Trail enthusiast.

                  Review

The John Muir Trail is a long-distance trail in the Sierra Nevada mountain range of California, passing through Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks and is named after naturalist John Muir.  The vast majority of the trail is situated within the National Wilderness Preservation System, which the United States Government designated for preservation in their natural condition.  The trail has been described as “America’s most famous trail” and is known for its relative solitude.  This guide is an excellent introduction to the trail.  It focuses on essential information and contains useful tools to facilitate the planning process rather than going into too much detail about the history of the trail. The way the book is written and the detail provided actually makes it a great resource not just for planning your trip, but to help you enjoy the experience.
