This book is a good investment for someone who hasn’t had much experience planning trips, especially a cruise.  It was very informative with plenty of tips on saving money and strategies on making the best choices for your family, giving you a firm foundation.  While not all  tips will apply to everyone and there are some chapters that can be skipped, all in all it is a great book.

        Review

This book is a very readable, comprehensive, up-to-date guidebook of the Washington D.C. area.  An index made it easy to turn to the specific info I was looking for. There is plenty of basic information on finding the best hotels in your budget range, giving you plenty of choices.  The sections on tours and attractions is quite extensive.  One feature that I like is the “Best Of” lists that help you find the best hotels, restaurants, attractions, tours, etc.  They also have a chart that arranges attractions by “type” making it easy to find the events you are interested in.  The book is sprinkled with “unofficial tips” that give you a heads up on things ranging from how to navigate the metro to how to best navigate the Smithsonian. Anyone planning a tour of the capital should not leave home without it.

            Familius
            Retail Price $17.95
            Amazon Price: $13.73

            Book Description:

After more than twenty years living internationally—sixteen addresses, eight countries and five different  languages—writer Melissa Bradford shares a fantastic journey of motherhood that will inspire any family.

Follow this family of six on their passage—extraordinary, hilarious and heartbreakingly poignant—from Bright Lights (of New York City) to the Northern Lights (of Norway) to the City of Light (Paris) to the speed-of-light of the Autobahn (in Munich).  Continue deep into the tropics of Southeast Asia (Singapore) and end your voyage in the heights of the Swiss Alps (Geneva).

As varied as the topography—the craggy fjords, the meandering Seine, the black forests, the muggy tropics, the soaring Alps—this multicultural tale traverses everything from giving birth in a château in Versailles to living on an island in a fjord. From singing jazz on national Norwegian T.V. to judging an Indonesian beauty contest. From navigating the labyrinth of French bureaucracy and the traffic patterns of Singapore to sitting around a big pine table where the whole family learns languages, cultures, cuisines—where they, in short, learn to love this complex and diverse world and, most importantly, each other.

            Review

The author has lived a life that others only dream of, traveling the globe and raising her family in a variety of interesting, life-enriching settings.  Not that her life has been a picnic.  She has suffered loss, had to endure change, and make a consistent life for her children though her living conditions were anything but consistent.  Due to her situation, Melissa has learned to see her life as an adventure and shares how to live life in the moment.  She encourages the reader to see their lives the same way, no matter where they live, and to make hospitality a way of life.  It was a fantastic read!

It includes recommendations covering just about every field – food, wine, shopping, spas and local festivals, and quickly became our go-to reference book when we went back to visit the area. I especially like the section on self-guided tours. It helped me take in the local culture and see things I didn’t even know existed!

This book is a necessity for economically and successfully planning a Disney World trip. It is simply indispensable and possibly the best investment I ever made. It has allowed me to visit Walt Disney World six times without having to wait in line for anything, even during the busiest seasons. People spend thousands of dollars on a Disney vacation, yet this book is what allowed me to truly enjoy it all as inexpensively as possible without waiting in line. There is so much useful information in this book about a myriad of all-things Disney. And it’s an entertaining read to boot! I even enjoyed sections that didn’t pertain to what I was interested.
